Visiting Frankfurt, Germany - One of the World's Richest Cities Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Within the Main River Valley, just east of where the Main meets the Rhine, sits the prevailing city of Frankfurt. Presently and historically considered a nerve center for commerce, banking, and transportation, Frankfurt am Main of west central Germany possesses many aspects of the old world that function as a viable part of this contemporary city.

Visitors to Frankfurt am Main, not to be confused with Frankfurt (Oder) a small city in northeastern Germany, will find its location ideal. Situated on both sides of the Main River, this hilly region is totally surrounded by rich forest; settlement in the area goes back to 1st Century Roman times.

Significantly, Charles I held a royal court in Frankfurt in the 800's. During the Middle Ages, kings of the Holy Roman Empire were elected here, and, later on, emperors were crowned in Frankfurt. In the mid-1800's, Germany's new parliament first met here. Consequently, Frankfurt has been at the forefront of German and European change.

Currently, Frankfurt is at the heart of economic growth for the region. The European Central Bank, a number of major German banks, and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange together have made this city a major financial center of the European Union. Many international companies call Frankfurt their home away from home.

Frankfurt has traditionally been known as a marketplace for meeting and exchanging goods. More than fifty trade fairs and exhibitions are still held in Frankfurt yearly. Most notably, the Frankfurt Book Fair in mid-October and the International Automobile Exhibition in September.

Frankfurt offers travelers varying means of transportation in, out of, and around the city. The Autobahn converges at the city. The Frankfurt Airport is considered one of Europe's busiest. A train station is located at the airport as well, making intercity travel quite convenient. Within the city, public transportation includes buses, above ground trams and the S-Bahn and U-Bahn underground train lines. Additionally, bridges in Frankfurt connect the banks of the Main River. Most notably, the Eiserner Steg (Iron Bridge) has been open to walking traffic since 1869.

One of Frankfurt's cultural attractions, the Museumsufer (Museum Embankment) contains a varying array of museums, located along the Main, with themes ranging from history, to art and architecture. An end of the summer cultural festival, Museumsuferfest, attracts over three million visitors every year to this area.

Numerous historical attractions entice visitors. The Romerberg area of old downtown was a series of houses that were acquired in the 14th Century from a wealthy merchant. The main house is the site of the city's first town hall. The area was rebuilt to original specifications after the Second World War.

Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral is a gothic structure built during the 14th and 15th Centuries. It's known as the main church of Frankfurt. In 1867, the cathedral was destroyed by fire, but was subsequently rebuilt.

Saint Paul's Church was established in 1789. Germany's first parliament met here in 1848. The interior of the church was partially destroyed during the war, but was built up again with modern fixtures.

Visitors can also experience the Frankfurt Opera, site-see at the Saalburg, an old Roman fort, and become enlightened by activity at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. Named after the celebrated writer and poet born in Frankfurt in 1749.

Frankfurt's extensive history is preserved, but the city has been renewed in order to meet present-day needs. The ancient city's marketplaces where trade and commerce took place have been updated. Frankfurt now promotes economic stability for the entire region. The city's many skyscrapers reflect this while postulating the direction of Frankfurt's further growth.

The road calls itself 'Auf dem Roemerberg' (on the Rome mountain) and the telephone number is: +49-69-21238800. Ask them for a city map. What is the European Central Bank? Saturday, August 28, 2010

The European Central Bank (ECB) was established on 1st of June, 1998 by the European Union. Its headquarters are in Frankfurt, Germany. It is among one of the most important central banks of the world. It covers the 16 member States of the Eurozone, and holds the responsibility for monetary policy. In principle the forerunner of ECB was the European Monetary Institute (EMI). Though, with respect to design and importance, ECB is actually the successor of the German Bundesbank.

At the beginning of the second stage of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) of European Union, the EMI was established in order to prepare for the creation of the ECB, European System of Central Banks (ESCB), and to manage the intermediary issues of the States taking on board the euro.

The EMI was officially replaced with the ECB by the benefit of the Treaty on European Union on 1st June, 1998. However, it did not put its full power into affect until the initiation of the euro on 1 January 1999. This indicated the third stage of EMU.

The chief objective of the ECB was to keep the price steady within the Eurozone. It is the responsibility the ECB to outline, and execute the monetary policy for the Eurozone, to manage foreign exchange operations, to care for the foreign reserves of the European System of Central banks, and to advance smooth operation of the money market infrastructure.

The ECB has total control to approve issuance of euro banknotes. Even though the other states can supply euro coins, yet the authorisation of the amount is controlled by the ECB in advance. The ECB must work as a team with the EU, and with third parties and units, internationally. It contributes in keeping the stability of the financial system, and supervises the banking sector.

The ECB comprises of a Governing Council, Executive Board, and a General Council. It is an independent institute, and is assigned a separate budget obtained from national central banks. The Governing Council is the ultimate decision-making unit of the ECB.

The Executive Board holds the responsibility of running the bank, and for the execution of the monetary policy that is outlined by the Governing Council. It comprises of the President of the Bank, a vice president and four other members. These members are appointed by the member states for the period of eight years. The General Council is responsible for transitional issues like maintaining the exchange rates of currencies until all the member states adopt the euro. After which, it will be dissolved.

The first president of the European Central Bank was Wim Duisenberg, who was the former president of EMI. The French disagreed with Duisenberg to be the president, as they thought that if the ECB was located in Germany its president should be French. This dispute was settled in a noble way according to which, at the end of the mandate of Duisenberg at November 2003, Jean-Claude Trichet who was a Frenchman would replace him. Trichet is the current president of the ECB.

Interview - Om Books International With "Shah Rukh Can" at the Frankfurt Book Fair

Om-Books at the Frankfurt Book Fair - Exclusive Interview with Ajay Mago

It's the day before the official opening of the Frankfurt International Book fair. All carpets are still covered with plastic, there ist still work going on at the stalls. The huge area hums with sounds, but only few people can be seen. A funny feeling creeps up inside me. At normal Fair days there is a bustle of crowds with mobile at the ear and books in arms. The escalators and glides are empty. A little eerie, somehow.
But I have a date in hall 8, with the international publishers, and that's where I am going now. It is a long way, from the City Entrance to my destination I almost need 20 minutes. Finally I reach stall P 915. A man sits at a small table and prepares the decorations for his stall.

"Ajay?" I ask, "Ajay Mago?"
He gets up and greets me with a nice hug. And at once points at the books on the shelf behind him. That's what I have come for.
Ajay Mago, the boss of Om Books International, takes the first copy of Mushtaq Shiekh's book "Shah Rukh Can" and hands it to me.
"Beautiful", I say excitedly. And when will it be in the book stores? "Shah Rukh Can will now be published in November", he says. Why has there been a delay? And how is Mushtaq?
He laughs. "Mushtaq is very busy. He does five films at the same time. He hardly sleeps. In the last few weeks he has completely freaked out!"
But why does he do this, I ask and I am concerned.
"Well, he got the opportunities and he uses them."
So we can look forward to films with good scripts, I conclude.

Then I am in for the next surprise. Ajay Mago hands me a dummy copy of the German edition. "Shah Rukh Kann" I am truly excited. It looks fantastic! And I take a deep breath to ask my favourite question: "When?"
"It will be on the market in December. We found a publisher for it in Germany. We would have liked it to be published at an earlier date, but now German readers have to wait until December."
He shakes his head. "It is difficult to find a publisher in Germany. Every one seems to know Shah Rukh Khan, even the taxi driver or the people in the hotel know Shah Rukh. And in spite of this the search for a publisher is difficult. I do not understand this, we get offers from France or Italy, but here? For Mushtaq's book on Om Shanti Om we have decided to publish the German edition ourselves. We plan to launch it in January, the edition will be a little different, though. Mushtaq will exchange some photos and use some new, yet unpublished ones."

Wonderful news! He invites me for a cup of coffee. The café bar in the hall is still a provisional one. Ajay Mago looks hesitantly at the food on display, the German cakes are new to him, he decides to have a muffin but eyes my apple cake with interest. I offer him some to try. He takes the juicy piece into his mouth and it seems as if someone had switched on a lamp inside him: The man beams with delight! Very well then, apple cake... I will remember that.

I discover one of Mushtaq's earlier books, long out of print, which he is going to relaunch. "Devdas - the Indian Hamlet" And again my favourite question: "When can the readers look forward to this?" "In the spring of 2009, we think we will have it ready in February."
"And do you plan a German edition too?" I ask. Ajay Mago beams at me. I smile back.
