How to Avoid Hidden Costs on Your Next Car Rental in Spain

The first and most important advice is that you should never be blinded by a cheap, fabulous day rate for the rental vehicle you're planning to book. Depending on your travel destination a lot off extra charges may apply, like airport surcharges, insurance, sales taxes, licensing fees, local and state taxes, concession recovery fees, customer facility charges, mandatory theft protection, young driver fees to name just a few.

By the time all the extra charges are added onto your bill, you may find yourself paying almost double the cheap car rental base rate you were quoted.

How can you avoid paying almost double that fantastic base rate?

Read the following tips on the surcharges and tricks for how to cut the expenses you're most likely to face at the desk of the local car hire company.

Airport Taxes

If you have booked your car hire rental at an airport location, in many cases the car hire agency is contractually required to pay a concession fee to the airport. It does not matter if you collect the vehicle when you get of the plane or if you go to an airport location when you're already staying in town. So don't try to be smart by not picking up your rental car as soon as you get off the plane, go to your hotel first and then return to the rental office at the airport to pick up the car. You will have to add up the additional expenses (taxi or any other local transport) to the price of the rent a car.

Make sure to check if the concession fee (sometimes called airport tax) is included in the quoted price, some online car hire booking engines do not mention this charge at all until the moment you're almost ready to confirm the car hire booking online.

Local and state taxes

In Europe local and state taxes, sometimes also called sales tax vary considerably from country to country. Depending on the country of origin you probably can't avoid European value-added tax (VAT), which can be as high as 25 percent, depending on the country you're travelling to. In some cases you will be charged a small fee which is used by the local governments to fund local development projects or improvements to the infrastructure. It is important to know that in some countries you may be entitled to a total or partial refund of the VAT, occasionally this can greatly reduce the final cost of the service of the car hire company you're booking your vehicle with.

Insurance

One of the most common extra charges is for the insurance, usually referred to by the car hire companies as Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). For an extra amount per day (the so-called Excess Waiver), you can avoid liability for any damage to the vehicle, provided you're not found guilty of gross negligence. Basic insurance is compulsory in most European countries and built into the basic car rental cost.

Before you sign up for the extra insurance make sure if it is really worthwhile to do so. Some credit cards also provide additional insurance when you rent a car. Apart from the CDW-LDW the most common insurance options are the Additional Liability Insurance (ALI), the Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) or the Personal Effects Coverage (PEC) which you can purchase from the car hire company at the time that you collect your rental vehicle.

Icelandic volcano disrupts global air travel‎ Monday, December 13, 2010

www.timesofearth.com LONDON — Thousands of people have been stranded at airports around the world after a cloud of ashes from an Icelandic volcano eruption spread over Europe. Europe's air-traffic control centre predicted 17000 flights would be cancelled on Friday and several countries have completely closed their air space. Experts cautioned the fallout from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in southeast Iceland could take several days to clear and aviation authorities refused to say when the skies would clear again. All of Europe's three biggest airports - London Heathrow, Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt - were closed by the ash, which is a threat to jet engines and pilot visibility. Poland, Britain, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belgium and the Netherlands shut down all or most of their airspace. Finland, France, Germany, Russia and Spain experienced major disruption, although Sweden and Norway have began to reopen airspace. As the giant no-fly zone grew, Poland said it may delay Sunday's funeral of Lech Kaczynski, the Polish president who was killed in an air crash along with 95 others last week. Several world leaders are expected to attend the event and the cloud could prevent them from travelling to the city of Krakow. Volcanoes are a much-feared peril in civil aviation, disgorging fine ash that can damage jet engines, clog fuel systems and drastically reduce visibility. The cloud is drifting 6000-11000 metres up in the air and ...

Lufthansa Airbus A320 wingstrike at Hamburg during Emma Sunday, December 12, 2010

Someone else shot this video of a Lufthansa Airbus A320 on a flight from Munich to Hamburg which hits the left wingtip and almost drags the right engine on runway 33 during extreme weather and gusting crosswinds caused by storm Emma. Picture here bjones4.com Aircraft are certified to land in steady crosswinds (around 30 knots/55 km per hour) and crews are trained for this and do practice maximum crosswind landings in the simulator several times per year. The crosswind component at the time was around 20 to 25 knots which is within the croswind limitation of the aircraft. Storms like this one called "Emma" on the 1st of March 2008 with high winds and gusts are however very demanding on the crew. Initially they had the required crab angle but during the transition from crab to slip (upwind wing has to be low) the pilot did not get enough right wing down and caught a severe gust during the touchdown maneuver. The gust then lifted the wing which is why the aircraft rolled to the left and drifted across the runway. They are lucky they didn't cartwheel. The only correct option at this point was to go around. They landed about 20 minutes later on a different runway without further incident. Over 70 flights were canceled in Frankfurt due to the storm Emma on 1st of March 2008.

New Way to Travel Saturday, December 11, 2010

These days, people are finding different ways to go on long trips rather than having to drive their own vehicles and spend outrageous amounts of money on gas. One type that many people have found to be effective is taking a bus charter to different places.

These trips can last anywhere from a day trip to a week long trip to places like Las Vegas or the Grand Canyon. Companies all over the United States have made large amounts of money simply by buying a few coach buses, hiring professional drivers, and taking people on trips.

These bus charter companies can range anywhere from privately owned companies with just a few drivers and buses, to large corporations that are owned by public transportation companies with an entire fleet of buses and drivers. Many taxicab companies also use a bus charter system to help cater to larger groups.

Businesses may also hire bus charter companies as a cost effective method to help get a large group of people to events like a group meeting, recreational camp, or a racing event. Entertainment companies may also hire bus companies as temporary shuttles for events like festivals or conferences.

Events like a high school prom are also big events for bus rental companies because party buses can be used in place of limousines to drive large groups of kids. These party buses can also be used for other social events as a form of private luxury transportation. Weddings are also big to use buses because many couples are now hiring old preserved buses as their wedding transportation rather than the traditional car.

These days, if a professional sports team is going on a cross country trip, they usually use the team jet, however, if it is a short enough trip to use ground transportation, many sports teams use a bus charter to help transport them from city to city. College teams usually always use chartered buses for transportation since it is much more cost effective to drive from game to game rather than fly everywhere.

Other groups in the national spotlight who also use a bus charter are bands or groups who are travelling on tour from venue to venue and who need mobile rest and recreation facilities. Although some of these bands own their own bus, many often rent out buses when they go on tour since it is easier to transport the group and gear.

How to Find Cheap Car Rentals Sunday, December 5, 2010

Car rentals can be quite the expense, especially for customers traveling out of state, and even out of the country. There are car rental companies that charge per mile, and other car companies that offer an unlimited mileage package to customers renting a car for a day, a weekend or even longer. Using these tips, the customer can find cheap vehicle rental rates and save money on car rentals.

Go for the unlimited mileage. Unlimited mileage is necessary for those customers seeking unlimited driving time over the period of days without being charged for every mile that the vehicle goes over the limit.

Booking vehicle rentals online can save hundreds of dollars per vehicle trip. Coupons are often available which can give the customer free days for the vehicle rental, or a percentage off of the vehicle rental price. Booking online and signing up for opt-in lists can also enable the customer to receive valuable offers in their future, sent directly to their email in-box.

Ask for the free upgrade. Did you know that often just asking for an upgrade can yield positive results? Many times, if vehicles are not in stock, the customer is eligible for an upgrade as the vehicle should be in stock, especially if a vehicle has been reserved.

Calling the vehicle rental company beforehand can mean the difference of a rental upgrade. Many times, if you call ahead of time, you will be eligible for deals offered to customers that have reserved a vehicle. Especially through the holiday seasons, it is crucial that a vehicle be reserved - just to ensure a vehicle will be available for the vacation.

Did you know that going with an independent vehicle rental company can save up to thirty percent off of the price of a vehicle? When a vehicle is rented with these companies, they are aware that the have to outsell the price of the competition and therefore will lower their prices to reflect these discounts.

Comparing prices online could save up to forty percent off of the price of a vehicle rental. Travel websites often offer these comparisons with one search. One search can yield results for all of the leading, and independent vehicle rental companies can compare the sizes, prices and special offer of vehicles.

Booking a vehicle rental online and bundling the vehicle with airline tickets and hotel means that the consumer can save valuable money on the vacation. Did you know that you could save up to fifteen percent on vehicle rentals? When you are planning a vacation, it just becomes easier to book everything at once, rather than to complete all reservations separately.

Return the vehicle early. Many companies offer discounts and incentives for customers willing to return the vehicle early. Consider returning the vehicle late in the evening before the morning it is due back. This will ensure no extras charges are accumulated and money is saved on the complete car rental bill. Using these tips, your car rental fee doesn't have to break the bank!

Cyprus Car Hire - Choosing the Right Car to Hire Friday, December 3, 2010

Cyprus car hire online or offline is exceptionally competitive. So it is important to make sure the car you hire is the type of car you will need for your Cyprus holiday or business trip as opposed to a car that is you want - well-priced or not.

One of the most popular Cyprus car hire requests is for an open-top or soft-top jeep otherwise known as a 4 x 4 or 4WD. The image of driving along in the sunshine, wind through your hair, and not a care in the world is portrayed in many a movie and makes for a lovely idea whilst on holiday.

Soft top jeeps are indeed perfect for short trips between your accommodation and the beach, for seafront road jaunts at slow speeds, and days out in the Troodos mountains. Larger hard-top jeeps which offer a more powerful engine, much more space inside both for passengers and storage, the option of air conditioning, and the security of a closed and locked vehicle are a more secure alternative, although they cost more and do not have the same magical image as a soft top jeep.

Sedan, saloon, or family cars are broken down into two categories: those with air conditioning and those without. Do not be persuaded into thinking you will not need air conditioning in the summer months. The Cyprus sun is very hot between June and September. For anyone unaccustomed to the intense heat of Cyprus' Mediterranean climate, driving in a hire car without air conditioning can be quite uncomfortable, especially when many secondary roads through and around Cyprus' quaint villages are dusty and dry.

The advantage of a sedan (or saloon or family) car is that it has a large, lockable, closed boot, a lot of space for passengers and travels well on most roads. The roads in Cyprus are in fairly good condition and the highways which connect the major towns are excellent, making a self-drive car an excellent means of transport around the country for sightseeing.

Because of this, saloon cars are one of the more frequently rented cars from locally-based car hire companies, simply because the price bracket is very affordable.

For cheap car hire in Cyprus, you will need to consider the small or compact car for your travels. Usually seating four passengers (as opposed to the saloon's five), the compact hire cars are great for small families who have children. They travel well on the highways, and although they slow considerably on the way up the steep ascent of the Troodos mountains, small cars are still able to hold their own. It is advised not to run the air conditioning (if the car has it) on full during the climb, however.

For business trips or quick run-arounds, small rental cars are ideal and their cheap price makes them very attractive to cost-conscious sole travellers looking for the best option. They are also easy to park and easily-maneuvered through the narrow village streets, particularly in the Troodos mountain areas such as Laneia.

Of course, there is always the luxury car hire - limos, convertibles, premium makes and models such as Mercedes and BMW, however these are priced on a different scale which is significantly higher than standard holiday self-drive cars.

When booking your car online, it is important to compare exactly what you will get for your money when you consider renting a car in Cyprus, since the cheapest price may not necessarily offer the best deal. Often for just a few extra euros a day, a substantially better car package can be arranged, which may or may not include delivery to Larnaca Airport, Paphos airport or your accommodation.

Additionally, ensure that the car hire company provides you with a map of Cyprus, 24 hour contact details should anything go wrong, a complete price including VAT, insurance without excess, and is able to deliver it to your location. This should be standard regardless of the type of car you rent.

Check to see what a standard insurance policy includes, and whether you are required to refill the full tank of petrol or to pay for it and leave it empty. In such a case, try to request that you just replace the petrol used instead as it will be much cheaper to do so. Small cars - even when driving islandwide - may not use an entire tank for the minimum rental of two days for example.

Finally, particularly if you are on a budget, try to bear in mind what is really important for you on your Cyprus holiday or business trip, such as security (closed top car), economy (small car), fun (open top jeep), safety and/or appearances (premium models) and size (sedan/saloon car or hard top large jeep).

By considering your needs over your wants when booking, you will easily choose the right Cyprus car hire for you, every time.
