How to Avoid Hidden Costs on Your Next Car Rental in Spain
The first and most important advice is that you should never be blinded by a cheap, fabulous day rate for the rental vehicle you're planning to book. Depending on your travel destination a lot off extra charges may apply, like airport surcharges, insurance, sales taxes, licensing fees, local and state taxes, concession recovery fees, customer facility charges, mandatory theft protection, young driver fees to name just a few.
By the time all the extra charges are added onto your bill, you may find yourself paying almost double the cheap car rental base rate you were quoted.
How can you avoid paying almost double that fantastic base rate?
Read the following tips on the surcharges and tricks for how to cut the expenses you're most likely to face at the desk of the local car hire company.
Airport Taxes
If you have booked your car hire rental at an airport location, in many cases the car hire agency is contractually required to pay a concession fee to the airport. It does not matter if you collect the vehicle when you get of the plane or if you go to an airport location when you're already staying in town. So don't try to be smart by not picking up your rental car as soon as you get off the plane, go to your hotel first and then return to the rental office at the airport to pick up the car. You will have to add up the additional expenses (taxi or any other local transport) to the price of the rent a car.
Make sure to check if the concession fee (sometimes called airport tax) is included in the quoted price, some online car hire booking engines do not mention this charge at all until the moment you're almost ready to confirm the car hire booking online.
Local and state taxes
In Europe local and state taxes, sometimes also called sales tax vary considerably from country to country. Depending on the country of origin you probably can't avoid European value-added tax (VAT), which can be as high as 25 percent, depending on the country you're travelling to. In some cases you will be charged a small fee which is used by the local governments to fund local development projects or improvements to the infrastructure. It is important to know that in some countries you may be entitled to a total or partial refund of the VAT, occasionally this can greatly reduce the final cost of the service of the car hire company you're booking your vehicle with.
Insurance
One of the most common extra charges is for the insurance, usually referred to by the car hire companies as Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). For an extra amount per day (the so-called Excess Waiver), you can avoid liability for any damage to the vehicle, provided you're not found guilty of gross negligence. Basic insurance is compulsory in most European countries and built into the basic car rental cost.
Before you sign up for the extra insurance make sure if it is really worthwhile to do so. Some credit cards also provide additional insurance when you rent a car. Apart from the CDW-LDW the most common insurance options are the Additional Liability Insurance (ALI), the Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) or the Personal Effects Coverage (PEC) which you can purchase from the car hire company at the time that you collect your rental vehicle.

Arriving Frankfurt by plane / Ankunft in Frankfurt im Flugzeug Frankfurt am Main Frankfurt am Main (German pronunciation: [ˈfʁaŋkfʊɐt am ˈmaɪn] ( listen), English: /ˈfræŋkfərt/), commonly known simply as Frankfurt, is the largest city in the German state of Hesse and the fifth-largest city in Germany, with a 2009 population of 667330. The urban area had an estimated population of 2295000 in 2010.[2] The city is at the centre of the larger Frankfurt/Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region which has a population of 5600000[3] and is Germany's second largest metropolitan area. In English, this city's name translates to "Frankfurt on the Main" (pronounced like English mine or German mein). The city is located on an ancient ford on the river Main, the German word for which is "Furt". A part of early Franconia, the inhabitants were the early Franks. Thus the city's name receives its legacy as being the "ford of the Franks".[4] Situated on the Main River, Frankfurt is the financial and transportation centre of Germany and the largest financial centre in continental Europe. Icelandic volcano disrupts global air travel Monday, December 13, 2010
www.timesofearth.com LONDON — Thousands of people have been stranded at airports around the world after a cloud of ashes from an Icelandic volcano eruption spread over Europe. Europe's air-traffic control centre predicted 17000 flights would be cancelled on Friday and several countries have completely closed their air space. Experts cautioned the fallout from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in southeast Iceland could take several days to clear and aviation authorities refused to say when the skies would clear again. All of Europe's three biggest airports - London Heathrow, Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Frankfurt - were closed by the ash, which is a threat to jet engines and pilot visibility. Poland, Britain, Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belgium and the Netherlands shut down all or most of their airspace. Finland, France, Germany, Russia and Spain experienced major disruption, although Sweden and Norway have began to reopen airspace. As the giant no-fly zone grew, Poland said it may delay Sunday's funeral of Lech Kaczynski, the Polish president who was killed in an air crash along with 95 others last week. Several world leaders are expected to attend the event and the cloud could prevent them from travelling to the city of Krakow. Volcanoes are a much-feared peril in civil aviation, disgorging fine ash that can damage jet engines, clog fuel systems and drastically reduce visibility. The cloud is drifting 6000-11000 metres up in the air and ...

Lufthansa Airbus A320 wingstrike at Hamburg during Emma Sunday, December 12, 2010
Someone else shot this video of a Lufthansa Airbus A320 on a flight from Munich to Hamburg which hits the left wingtip and almost drags the right engine on runway 33 during extreme weather and gusting crosswinds caused by storm Emma. Picture here bjones4.com Aircraft are certified to land in steady crosswinds (around 30 knots/55 km per hour) and crews are trained for this and do practice maximum crosswind landings in the simulator several times per year. The crosswind component at the time was around 20 to 25 knots which is within the croswind limitation of the aircraft. Storms like this one called "Emma" on the 1st of March 2008 with high winds and gusts are however very demanding on the crew. Initially they had the required crab angle but during the transition from crab to slip (upwind wing has to be low) the pilot did not get enough right wing down and caught a severe gust during the touchdown maneuver. The gust then lifted the wing which is why the aircraft rolled to the left and drifted across the runway. They are lucky they didn't cartwheel. The only correct option at this point was to go around. They landed about 20 minutes later on a different runway without further incident. Over 70 flights were canceled in Frankfurt due to the storm Emma on 1st of March 2008.

New Way to Travel Saturday, December 11, 2010
These days, people are finding different ways to go on long trips rather than having to drive their own vehicles and spend outrageous amounts of money on gas. One type that many people have found to be effective is taking a bus charter to different places.
These trips can last anywhere from a day trip to a week long trip to places like Las Vegas or the Grand Canyon. Companies all over the United States have made large amounts of money simply by buying a few coach buses, hiring professional drivers, and taking people on trips.
These bus charter companies can range anywhere from privately owned companies with just a few drivers and buses, to large corporations that are owned by public transportation companies with an entire fleet of buses and drivers. Many taxicab companies also use a bus charter system to help cater to larger groups.
Businesses may also hire bus charter companies as a cost effective method to help get a large group of people to events like a group meeting, recreational camp, or a racing event. Entertainment companies may also hire bus companies as temporary shuttles for events like festivals or conferences.
Events like a high school prom are also big events for bus rental companies because party buses can be used in place of limousines to drive large groups of kids. These party buses can also be used for other social events as a form of private luxury transportation. Weddings are also big to use buses because many couples are now hiring old preserved buses as their wedding transportation rather than the traditional car.
These days, if a professional sports team is going on a cross country trip, they usually use the team jet, however, if it is a short enough trip to use ground transportation, many sports teams use a bus charter to help transport them from city to city. College teams usually always use chartered buses for transportation since it is much more cost effective to drive from game to game rather than fly everywhere.
Other groups in the national spotlight who also use a bus charter are bands or groups who are travelling on tour from venue to venue and who need mobile rest and recreation facilities. Although some of these bands own their own bus, many often rent out buses when they go on tour since it is easier to transport the group and gear.

How to Find Cheap Car Rentals Sunday, December 5, 2010
Car rentals can be quite the expense, especially for customers traveling out of state, and even out of the country. There are car rental companies that charge per mile, and other car companies that offer an unlimited mileage package to customers renting a car for a day, a weekend or even longer. Using these tips, the customer can find cheap vehicle rental rates and save money on car rentals.
Go for the unlimited mileage. Unlimited mileage is necessary for those customers seeking unlimited driving time over the period of days without being charged for every mile that the vehicle goes over the limit.
Booking vehicle rentals online can save hundreds of dollars per vehicle trip. Coupons are often available which can give the customer free days for the vehicle rental, or a percentage off of the vehicle rental price. Booking online and signing up for opt-in lists can also enable the customer to receive valuable offers in their future, sent directly to their email in-box.
Ask for the free upgrade. Did you know that often just asking for an upgrade can yield positive results? Many times, if vehicles are not in stock, the customer is eligible for an upgrade as the vehicle should be in stock, especially if a vehicle has been reserved.
Calling the vehicle rental company beforehand can mean the difference of a rental upgrade. Many times, if you call ahead of time, you will be eligible for deals offered to customers that have reserved a vehicle. Especially through the holiday seasons, it is crucial that a vehicle be reserved - just to ensure a vehicle will be available for the vacation.
Did you know that going with an independent vehicle rental company can save up to thirty percent off of the price of a vehicle? When a vehicle is rented with these companies, they are aware that the have to outsell the price of the competition and therefore will lower their prices to reflect these discounts.
Comparing prices online could save up to forty percent off of the price of a vehicle rental. Travel websites often offer these comparisons with one search. One search can yield results for all of the leading, and independent vehicle rental companies can compare the sizes, prices and special offer of vehicles.
Booking a vehicle rental online and bundling the vehicle with airline tickets and hotel means that the consumer can save valuable money on the vacation. Did you know that you could save up to fifteen percent on vehicle rentals? When you are planning a vacation, it just becomes easier to book everything at once, rather than to complete all reservations separately.
Return the vehicle early. Many companies offer discounts and incentives for customers willing to return the vehicle early. Consider returning the vehicle late in the evening before the morning it is due back. This will ensure no extras charges are accumulated and money is saved on the complete car rental bill. Using these tips, your car rental fee doesn't have to break the bank!

Cyprus Car Hire - Choosing the Right Car to Hire Friday, December 3, 2010
Cyprus car hire online or offline is exceptionally competitive. So it is important to make sure the car you hire is the type of car you will need for your Cyprus holiday or business trip as opposed to a car that is you want - well-priced or not.
One of the most popular Cyprus car hire requests is for an open-top or soft-top jeep otherwise known as a 4 x 4 or 4WD. The image of driving along in the sunshine, wind through your hair, and not a care in the world is portrayed in many a movie and makes for a lovely idea whilst on holiday.
Soft top jeeps are indeed perfect for short trips between your accommodation and the beach, for seafront road jaunts at slow speeds, and days out in the Troodos mountains. Larger hard-top jeeps which offer a more powerful engine, much more space inside both for passengers and storage, the option of air conditioning, and the security of a closed and locked vehicle are a more secure alternative, although they cost more and do not have the same magical image as a soft top jeep.
Sedan, saloon, or family cars are broken down into two categories: those with air conditioning and those without. Do not be persuaded into thinking you will not need air conditioning in the summer months. The Cyprus sun is very hot between June and September. For anyone unaccustomed to the intense heat of Cyprus' Mediterranean climate, driving in a hire car without air conditioning can be quite uncomfortable, especially when many secondary roads through and around Cyprus' quaint villages are dusty and dry.
The advantage of a sedan (or saloon or family) car is that it has a large, lockable, closed boot, a lot of space for passengers and travels well on most roads. The roads in Cyprus are in fairly good condition and the highways which connect the major towns are excellent, making a self-drive car an excellent means of transport around the country for sightseeing.
Because of this, saloon cars are one of the more frequently rented cars from locally-based car hire companies, simply because the price bracket is very affordable.
For cheap car hire in Cyprus, you will need to consider the small or compact car for your travels. Usually seating four passengers (as opposed to the saloon's five), the compact hire cars are great for small families who have children. They travel well on the highways, and although they slow considerably on the way up the steep ascent of the Troodos mountains, small cars are still able to hold their own. It is advised not to run the air conditioning (if the car has it) on full during the climb, however.
For business trips or quick run-arounds, small rental cars are ideal and their cheap price makes them very attractive to cost-conscious sole travellers looking for the best option. They are also easy to park and easily-maneuvered through the narrow village streets, particularly in the Troodos mountain areas such as Laneia.
Of course, there is always the luxury car hire - limos, convertibles, premium makes and models such as Mercedes and BMW, however these are priced on a different scale which is significantly higher than standard holiday self-drive cars.
When booking your car online, it is important to compare exactly what you will get for your money when you consider renting a car in Cyprus, since the cheapest price may not necessarily offer the best deal. Often for just a few extra euros a day, a substantially better car package can be arranged, which may or may not include delivery to Larnaca Airport, Paphos airport or your accommodation.
Additionally, ensure that the car hire company provides you with a map of Cyprus, 24 hour contact details should anything go wrong, a complete price including VAT, insurance without excess, and is able to deliver it to your location. This should be standard regardless of the type of car you rent.
Check to see what a standard insurance policy includes, and whether you are required to refill the full tank of petrol or to pay for it and leave it empty. In such a case, try to request that you just replace the petrol used instead as it will be much cheaper to do so. Small cars - even when driving islandwide - may not use an entire tank for the minimum rental of two days for example.
Finally, particularly if you are on a budget, try to bear in mind what is really important for you on your Cyprus holiday or business trip, such as security (closed top car), economy (small car), fun (open top jeep), safety and/or appearances (premium models) and size (sedan/saloon car or hard top large jeep).
By considering your needs over your wants when booking, you will easily choose the right Cyprus car hire for you, every time.
Limo Car Hire Cyprus is a local car rental agency based in Limassol, Cyprus. With over 20 years' experience, a friendly face, all inclusive low prices, quality cars, insurance without excess, free additional driver, free maps, and reliable 24/7 service with a smile, it is clear to see why so many customers book a Limo rent a car year after year after year for their Cyprus holiday and business needs.

Conversations in Management: Peter F. Drucker Monday, November 15, 2010
"Most people think they know what they are good at -- they are usually wrong." -Peter F. Drucker
Peter Drucker, the Father of Modern Management, was born in Vienna, Austria in 1909. He earned a doctorate in Public and International Law from Frankfurt University in Germany before moving to London where he worked as both an economist and financial news writer. In 1937 he again moved, but this time to the United States where he almost immediately established his reputation as a management expert with the 1939 publication of The End of Economic Man. Drucker was the first to conceive of management as a discipline--and like all disciplines, something that could be taught. He recognized that the nature of business was not a customer buying a product, but a customer satisfying a need. From this recognition, Drucker formulated management theories that spanned competitive strategy, entrepreneurship, organizational design and cost accounting. Frequently decades ahead of his time, he introduced both the concept and term knowledge worker--a term most associate with the Information Age--back in the 1950's. Through it all, Drucker was a champion for the individual. He was clear that people hate to be managed. Effective managers, therefore, attempt to maximize the productivity of a knowledge worker by focusing on performance and results in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
In that spirit, much of Drucker's later work focused on self-management. He argued that today's knowledge worker will most likely outlive their employing organizations. Coupled with the fact that the average worker's career is likely to last 50 years, individuals will have to learn to develop themselves, change to meet new requirements and stay energized through a long and multi-faceted career. To do all this, folks first have to figure out their strengths.
Drucker believed that people were only dimly aware of what they did well because they rarely examined the long-range consequences of their decisions. To remedy this, he suggested doing a personal feedback analysis. Whenever you take a key action, write down what you expect to happen. After a few months, check back to see if you got the results you expected. In this way, Drucker claimed, you will begin to discern your competencies. Once you learn what you are good at, place yourself in situations where your strengths can produce outstanding performance and results. Then work on improving your strengths. Fill in knowledge gaps and expand your understanding. Look for blind spots in your knowledge--places where not knowing is compromising your ability to succeed. Equally important, overcome your bad habits. If you are a visionary, start paying attention to details. If you revel in the specific, train yourself to think globally. Finally, learn from your feedback analysis what not to do. Not everyone does everything equally well. Don't waste your time trying to develop skills at which you'll never be more than mediocre at best. Strength is never built on weakness. Leverage what you do right to get the results you want.
Drucker added a final caution to everyone who engages in the world of management: mind your manners. He called manners the lubricating oil of the workplace. They reduce friction and make cooperation possible. In the end, simple courtesies and pleasantries are often the difference between success and abject failure.
Build on your strengths, respect others and mind your manners--not bad advice.

How to Rent a Classic Car
Although we would all agree that a classic car is a very desirable thing to have, the very fact that they are so desirable tends to position the ownership of a classic just outside a lot of people's price range. However much money you may be willing to spend, you need to make a value judgment. If you can afford the purchase, know that the car is the one you want and have the wherewithal to insure it properly, then good luck to you - that classic car can be yours today. However, the expense involved in buying a classic car can be dangerous - causing you to be in possession of a classic car AND a huge credit bill that you are not sure you can pay. That nagging realization will gnaw at your mind every time you get behind the wheel.
An option that has become increasingly popular in this day and age is rental. Renting a classic car for a certain purpose can be a solution for people who love classic cars but do not feel they can afford one just now. It can also work out for anyone who knows they want a classic car but does not want to purchase until they are certain that it feels right. As well as these situations, there may be a third that makes renting a classic car a worthwhile option. The combination of a love of classic cars and a special occasion is indeed a heady one, and may make for the best birthday, vacation or celebration of your life.
Yes, we all love classic cars. There is something indefinable about them that makes the feeling of sitting behind the wheel or looking out onto your driveway feel like an almost religious experience. It isn't that the car makers of the past knew more about making a car than we do now - they did not. The cars of today are the result of years worth of accumulated knowledge and they will be classic cars in the future (at least, some of them will). It is more that classic cars represent a stylistic period which today looks timeless, but all those years ago was just of its time. But without even needing to intellectualize things, we can all agree that classic cars look great. Possessing one, even for a day, can feel pretty fine.
When it comes to hiring a classic car, there are just a few things to take into account. Because of the uniqueness of the car, there will be consequent unique terms and conditions as to its hire. Hiring a classic Alfa Romeo may feel like the best thing you have ever done, but if you end up denting it on the way back from the event it was hired for, it will put a crimp in your evening. Anyone would feel privileged to get behind the wheel of a Bugatti Veyron - but knowing how much it will cost could make you overly fretful about its condition and spoil the experience for you. Make sure, before you hire a classic car, that it will fit the experience practically that you had planned for it mentally. Otherwise, you could end up sour on the experience, which would be a pity.

Gold Coast Car Rental Wednesday, November 10, 2010
Known earlier as Coolangatta Airport, Gold slideAirport lies in the southern end of the greater area. The airport has expanded its operation from domestic flights to an International Terminal. In 2007 the terminal has redeveloped which an extension of the runway after Virgin Blue and Jetstar (Qantas Airlines low cost carrier) started their operation here.
New international airlines Tiger Airways and Air Asia X will also operate from Gold slide airport making its entry and exit points. Freedom Air and Virgin Pacific have been operating from here. Sometimes there are occasional needs, which you need to take care of immediately and cannot be put on hold until your next payday. Pay Day Loans are meant exactly for circumstances like these, as it has been carved out to provide you instant finances, so that you can take care of the emergency expenses. The loans are quick and are sanctioned almost within the same day of application. Moreover, the amount under these loans is transferred in to your savings account in less than 24 hours.
Usually these are unsecured loans, which of course mean that you get to derive the finances without pledging any collateral. With the help of these loans, you can take care of urgent needs like paying medical bills, school fees, car or house repair, meeting sudden tour expenses and so on. Although these loans are available with traditional as well as online lenders, it is preferable to use the online application mode to derive these loans. all you need to do is to fill a simple application form with the relevant details. After submitting the form, the loan providers will contact you immediately to verify the details you have provided in the application form.
In fact the amount is wired in to your bank account. The amount advanced is usually in the range of £100-£25000. This amount is made available for a period of 14- 31 days. As a matter of fact, the borrowed amount is deducted automatically from your bank account.
To derive the loans, you should be employed with a fixed monthly income of not less than £1200. A valid and active savings account is required and that your age should be more than 18 years. Bad credit borrowers too can avail these loans, as lenders advance the amount without any credit check.
The interest rate levied on the loans is high, but affordable rates can be obtained by comparing the rate quotes of various lenders. This will help you to derive the loans as per your need and requirement.
With pay day loans, it becomes easy for you to meet the unexpected emergency needs in a convenient and affordable manner.

How To Invest In Gold - Stock Market Saturday, October 16, 2010
The diversified portfolio has a small position in the gold market. For some investing in such market means holding its coins. Some speculators buy the contact futures on the commodity exchange. Future contracts are risky because you are betting that the price of the commodity will go higher in the future. The contract requires a relatively small up front payment, but there can be daily fluctuations that require you have funds to back the dips in the price of daily increases.
The reasons investors have been interested in this commodity is that the old reasoning was that if the stock market was down the commodity market was generally up. This reasoning has become a possibility, but not an axiom of the current marketplace. The weakness in the dollar generally brings a surge in the price. The current price is in the range of $670. Prices have fluctuated within a range of $664 and the current high of $672. Traders think this product could easily go as high as $1,000 an ounce.
Investing in such commodity stocks and precious metal index funds can be purchased through a stock broker. A stock broker specializing in this area is very important because the investment needs savvy investment advice. Most of the larger brokerage houses have individuals that are specialized in the area of commodities and precious metal stocks.
There are certain international commodity stocks that are noteworthy. A Canadian based international player in this type of commodity market is Agnico-Eagle Mines. It trades on the New York Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange under the stock ticker AEM. The stock is also sold on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. This company has more than thirty year history in the production of this kind of commodity Since the year 1970s AEM has produced over four million ounces. The company is international and has operations in Canada, United States, Mexico, Sweden and Finland.
Other noteworthy of such stocks include; Barrick Gold Corp, Goldcorp Inc., Kinross Gold Corp., and Newmont Mining. All of these commodity stocks are currently trading on the upside, but it is advisable for all investors to make sure these stocks fit your investment risk potential.
In recent years the price of this commodity has been as low as the $450 an ounce range. Since the late 1970s it has made huge profits for holders of this commodity. The key to owning it, is to know the various resistance points and to assess the global market for the use of such. It is used primarily in jewelry manufacturing and other types of manufacturing. Currently in India there is a small slow down in the use of this commodity for jewelry making. The same applies to a degree in China. Whether it is enough of a slow down to effect the price of this commodity is uncertain.
Investors who trade in such commodity should seek the advice of an analyst that can factor in all the various aspects that affect the price of this commodity. If you own it as a hedge against a weak dollar you should look for any strengthening in the dollar. The important thing to remember is to guide your investment in it to a level that you are comfortable. If you bought spot of this commodity at $600 an ounce, you might consider a rise to $720 a good profit. The rise to $1,000 an ounce may be bumpy and there is no telling when it will reach that level if it does as speculators have gambled.
There are numerous mining stocks of this product in the market and if you are interested in a small investment you can find these stocks in the $5 to $12 range. The smaller mining stocks of this product do carry a risk because a great deal of overhead goes into making a mining company profitable.
The range of risk and amount you decide to invest in this product is a personal choice. It is always advisable to seek the expert advice of a stock expert or commodity expert before leaping into this market. Another sage piece of advice I learned is to trust my sense of cashing out before the price drops significantly due to outside pressures.

Car Hire - Prices Continue to Increase Thursday, October 14, 2010
A recent study has shown that car hire prices are continuing to rise as a result of fuel prices increasing and due to the maintenance and overhead charges that most car hire companies have to face.
The survey was published by American Express and showed its 2007 rental rates and focussed on business travellers. It was determined from the research that the price for hiring a car jumped by 4.4 per cent between 2006 and 2007.
This AMEX study is known for being one of the most reliable sources of information on trends in the pricing of travel related services and it is therefore known as the Business Travel Monitor.
American car hire companies were showed to be having difficulty remaining profitable as their operating costs continue to rise. One of the biggest reasons for the companies finding it difficult to make any profit is due to fleet costs. Car hire firms are finding it hard to cope with the 20% increase on the costs of fleets; this increase is due to firms finding it much more difficult to buy new vehicles from the manufacturers for discount prices. This therefore means that it is extremely difficult to recover the extra expenses.
The survey shows a steady rise in car rental rates which goes back to 2001. The average price of hiring a car in 2001 was $63 and in 2007 it had risen steadily to $72. With this trend showing no signs of slowing down, finding cheap car hire when you are away on holiday in the US is not looking hopeful.

Travel Guide to Cologne Saturday, October 9, 2010
Cologne could be the fourth most significant place in Germany, with Berlin, Hamburg and Munich leading. Cologne is certainly a major metropolitan spot with more than ten million residents. Its waterfront as well as sky line seem stunning at night. It features international lodging chains including the Hilton and Hyatt. Cologne is extremely prominent for its colognes and fragrances such as the Eau de Cologne which is highly regarded throughout the world. The Italian expatriate Johann Maria Farina produced this brand new fragrance during the eighteenth century and termed it after his hometown, Cologne obviously. The city is famous as well for its beer called the Kolsch which is also the name of the city local dialect.
The city of Cologne is also famous because of its opera houses as well as contemporary architecture and edifices. Some of the most popular ones would be the old church Cologne Cathedral which is the town's major landmark, the twelve Romanesque Places of worship which have been well-known because of its medieval styles and structures, Cologne University which is the largest university in Germany, Farina Fragrance Museum where Eau de Cologne was concocted, and also the Kolnturm which is an impressive tall building in the city, among others. You'll find still countless incredibly built structures of the previous and present that will simply surprise you.
Shopping can also be a thrilling activity in Cologne city with famous shops as the Schildergasse and the eccentrically designed Ehrenstrass. To taste a bit more of the intellectually engaging activity while in the city, amazing galleries are classified as the best places such as the Imhoff-Schokoladenmuseum or Chocolate Museum, and the JavaMuseum which showcases modern day internet based art and the new media. Awesome botanical gardens can also be loved like the formal park known as the Flora und Botanischer Garten Koln and the Forstbotanischer Garten Köln.
The names of these places and other places are just too hard to pronounce (laughs), yet this would make your visit the more exciting because you really feel a bit of hidden knowledge along with each and every place. Everything simply arrives as a wonder, actually. Except if you know how to speak with their language, then the names of the places will simply inform you what to expect, almost.
Climate: The conditions in Cologne city is strongly affected by the Atlantic Ocean and its area in the part of the country's lowland zones. The town has a moderate climate and precipitations are generally continual all year round. During winter season, the city is known as one of the warmest places in the country. The number of warm times in a year is reasonably typical. Generally, the city features a pleasant climate which brings average rainfall each year, mild winters and warm summer times.
Transportation: Cologne, just like almost any advanced city, gives public transport to locals and tourists through railway services with the high speed ICE trains and Deutsche Bahn Intercity. The Thalys speed train also connects the city with Amsterdam, Paris and Brussels. The ICE trains on the other hand connect to some other German cities like Berlin and Frankfurt. Buses also frequent the city and suburbs. Bikes have become typical in the city utilized by local people who go travel coming from work and home.

Street Fighting Moves - The 3 Most Qualified Types of Street Fighting Instructors Tuesday, October 5, 2010
Before you can go about searching for the right self defense instructor, it is of utmost importance to understand that if your goal is to learn reality-based street fighting then, you will need to find an teacher with the real-world experience to support any of the black belts or awards he or she may have won.
After having been in the world of martial arts and self protection for several years now, it has become very apparent to me that there are three types of fighting instructors that are most suited for teaching street fighting. The first thing that I want to emphasize is that they may or may not have a black belt in a particular style or fighting system. Having a black belt is admirable, but in and of itself is not an absolute indicator of the best that teacher you will find.
#1 Most Qualified: Personal Body Guards (Especially Those That Are High Level Who Protect Diplomats and Politicians) - If you are lucky enough to find someone who is a black belt AND has had real world experience as a body guard, you can be sure that they know and are capable of using only that which will work 99% of the time. No fancy stances. No exotic postures or loud breathing through their nostrils while they move their hands and arms in slow circles in front of an opponent. Professional body guards are trained to have a high level awareness of danger and the deadly ability to respond. This is what counts in the streets.
#2 Most Qualified: Professional Bouncers - Two of the most trained fighters that I know and are also my teachers, Norm Bettencourt of Vancouver, B.C. Canada and Christopher "Bob" Roberts residing in Frankfurt, Germany, both black belts, have had extensive experience working the doors of night clubs which become a magnet for trouble as people start to drink and become rowdy and belligerent. The fact is that most bouncers see and are involved in more fights and altercations than most policemen in the course of a regular working day or night.
#3 Most Qualified: Military Combatants - The absolute best trainer that you can get is a black belt AND ex-military commando. Now we are talking about all around fighting machines. These are the proud men of our armed forces: Green Berets, Navy SEALS and Special Forces. Many of these type of instructors have had hand-to-hand combat and have stared death in the face many times. Who would be better to teach you how to handle the mugger in the streets than these guys? I guess that again I have been super blessed to also to have been trained by Andy Curtiss, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, black belt and ex-Green Beret. I can speak from personal first-hand experience is that when you are taught martial arts from the combative perspective, you can really learn what you need to know in as little as one weekend or in total of as little as 12 hours.
And now I'd like to invite you to get your Free Instant Access to a 30-minute TeleSeminar Audio on "How To Conquer The Fear of Street Fighting" when you visit:
http://www.CombatFightingSecrets.com/nofear.html
You will receive 30 minutes of secrets to never again fear any man with fear busting techniques that will work ever time!

Volkswagen's Scandal-Ending All Corruptions? Saturday, October 2, 2010
The shocking details of Volkswagen's sex-and-bribery scandal have shaken Germany Incorporated in the summer of 2005. Volkswagen's former Chief of Personnel, Peter Hartz paid $2.5 million dollars in illegal bribes for over nine years to the company's labor boss just to have the support of the management plans. The alleged illicit payments were used by Volkswagen's Works' Council Chief Klaus Volkert to finance his lavish foreign trips, parties, prostitutes, and luxury hotels in Brazils and Lisbon. And all of these are disguised as business expenses.
The big question is: who is behind this corrupt scheme? Did former Chief Executive and now Chairman Ferdinand Piech approve the operation? And what about the labor leaders in Frankfurt? What do they have to say about all this?
Volkswagen's Rotten Apple
For now Germany will still have to wait for the answers though there are speculations that Piech is going to be dragged in the scandal. Inside the courtroom just last week, the 65-year-old Hartz has admitted making the illegal payments of $2.5 million between the year 1994 and 2005 to Volkert while an additional $518,000 goes to Volkert's Brazilina lover, Adriana Barros. The sex junket that happens on January 25 was claimed by Hartz as his own doing and that he has no accomplice whatsoever.
Hartz is facing ten years of imprisonment but due to his confession he will be able to negotiate for a lighter sentence. He was able to receive a suspended jail term of two years and a fine of $750,000. Likewise the state prosecutor has also dropped charges pertaining to Hartz's misused of funds by participating in the travels and the sex parties explaining that the said episode have minimal damage to Volkswagen.
The scandal that happens in Volkswagen has prompted the German public to doubt their country's post war system of corporate governance. They have also questioned the system's openness to serious abuse. Under the system called codetermination, labor representatives are granted by law to obtain half the seats on a company's supervisory board. This in turn gives them significant control over management decisions. The only problem with this system is that it gives those in positions all the opportunities to abuse the power vested on them resulting to corruption. And that is not all; the chairman is given an extra vote which gives him the power to tip the scales in votes that usually ends with the splitting of the labor and management.
Such type of system normally gives the shareholder representatives the advantage in close boardroom battles. Unfortunately Piech has long ironed out everything and this includes weaving a close relationship with the labor at the Volkswagen empire. What is the significance of this? Piech with the labor at his side will be able to disgruntled shareholder representatives on his board.
At the recent Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen's new Works Council Chief Bernd Osterloh commented that their labor leaders would support Piech's reelection as supervisory board chairman in May, if he desires to go on with it.
More Trials to Come
Peter Hartz is the first of the four Volkswagen's managers that are to be put on trial. Similarly, Hans-Jürgen Uhl, a member of the German Parliament for the center-left Social Democrats was also charged with giving false statements and for being an accessory to breach of trust over his alleged participation in the sex junkets. The trial for Uhl case is due later this year.
Volkswagen's History
Many would probably ask, was Volkswagen's executives corrupt in the past? The German automaker's history is one that pictures success amidst trials. And so a great part of its history mainly focuses on its wonderful creations and not so on its executives.
Volkswagen the largest German automaker and brand of high quality auto parts like Volkswagen brake booster is considered to be an icon of the twentieth century. As a fact only a few car manufacturers can parallel the legendary cars created by the German automaker. Volkswagen's The Beetle has become the automaker's trademark. This "Bug" has also become one of the world's best selling cars of all time.
Aside from The Beetle, the Volkswagen bus has also made a name for its own and today viewed by many as a symbol of a generation. The Golf is another Volkswagen's masterpiece and similarly sells pretty well in the market.
Volkswagen does not only produce machines made of steel but creates masterpieces that become an indelible part of the cultural and personal lives of millions.
Volkswagen was born in an era that can be termed as "of the privilege few". And during those times Volkswagen was conceived as an affordable and reliable means of transport for many of those whose average income is not enough to purchase other brands of cars. It was in the year 1934 when Ferdinand Porsche has created the concept of first peoples' car for Europe. The first working prototype was launched in just a year.
By the end of 1942 Volkswagen was able to produced 70,000 vehicles and in 1945 in a shift recovery after the war the automaker was able to produce 2,000 vehicles but this time it was for the Allied Forces and the new German Post Office. By 1948, the German automaker has once again produced 25,000 vehicles plus two Beetles which are shipped to the USA. A year after, the German automaker was able to build 25,000 more vehicles including the Volkswagen Karmann convertible which became the best-selling convertible in the world.
1955 came and a million Volkswagens were built. This was the start of the company's growth. From company it has grown into a world corporation, building factories and working communities in countries like United Sates, Brazil, Canada and in some major centres in Western Europe.
Growing up with three brothers, Natalie Anderson became exposed early to the world of automobiles. This 29-year-old account manager now dreams of having her very own top-of-the-line vintage car. Known in Germany as Frankfurt Am Main, since it lies either side of the River Main, Frankfurt is a huge city and the biggest within the whole Hesse region. The true financial heart of Germany, Frankfurt has many flattering nicknames, which often refer to its rather Manhattan-like skyline. Much more than simply a popular tourist city, Frankfurt hosts many world-class trade fairs, including the largest book fair on the planet. Life on Post-Movie Theatre Diversions Monday, September 13, 2010
When I lived in Mannheim, Germany in the early 1960s, my brother and I were given a quarter and sent on our way to the base theater for a couple of hours every Saturday.
While we missed having a TV set to watch (since there was little if any U.S. broadcasting in Europe at the time), our weekly trip to the Saturday afternoon Matinee more than made up for the lack TV shows.
When a quarter would go a long way...
A quarter would pay not only for the movie, but also a bag of hot, buttery popcorn. Drinks were not allowed in the theater, but water fountains were available in the lobby area and soft drinks could be consumed in the lobby.
However, once the afternoon's entertainment started, few of us left our seats, as we were afraid we might miss something truly exciting or possibly gory.
After standing line and purchasing our tickets, we proceeded to get our popcorn, and possibly a candy bar if we had some unspent weekly allowance. We would spend a few minutes looking at the posters of coming attractions.
Often there were Vincent Price or Peter Cushing movies coming to the base in a few weeks, which promised creeping severed hands or battles with a world filled with vampires, or perhaps a Godzilla movie, with Tokyo being crushed yet again.
The excitement builds...
With the movie theater rapidly filling with 6 to 10 year-olds, milling about trying to find friends and pick the best vantage point, it was a bit loud and unruly, even for Military Brats in training.
The first few rows of seats filled quickly as many kids in the theater wanted to be as close to the screen as possible. I tried it once or twice, but looking upward with giant figures overhead was just not for me.
I preferred to be a few rows back in the center section, so I could actually see the entire screen, in case something came on the screen that was bit too scary.
After what seemed like an hour, the lights in the theater would begin dim and the nervous laughter and jokes would die down.
"Oh, say can you see... "
With the sound of the first bar or two of the Star Spangled Banner, everyone stood up and the curtains in front of the silver screen retracted revealing the flag in all it's glory. In a few moments the last note sounded and we were back in our seats ready for the show.
Usually the Saturday Matinee started with a cartoon, as I recall, sometimes Woody Woodpecker, followed by the weekly black and white serial. In the early 1960s, while color was very common in movies, often the Matinees had movies that were not exactly current. We really didn't care about color, as long as there was plenty of action.
One of the weekly serials featured Tom Mix, billed as the "The Miracle Rider", a cowboy hero who each week appeared to meet a an especially painful demise, though the hero's violent end was always left to our overactive imaginations.
Serials were also known as "Cliffhangers", as often there were scuffles high in the mountains, and at the end of an episode someone would be hanging over the edge of a cliff by their fingernails. You wouldn't find out until a week later if the hero was able to get rescued or was able to somehow pull himself back up over the edge at the last possible moment and escape an almost certain death.
Each week, the serial went back in time, to the few moments before the end of the previous week's episode, where we would see a few frames of missing footage from the serial. This missing footage showed how our hero (who always wore a white hat, of course), managed to get out of an impossible situation and cheat death once more.
What followed the revelation about how our hero was not in fact killed as we were led to believe, was about 15 minutes of Tom Mix or other serial heroes battling the bad guys and getting themselves into yet another impossible situation where it looked like he was about to be killed.
Then it was time for the main feature.
As long as there was some action and the romantic scenes were kept to a minimal level, we enjoyed whatever was being shown.
Our favorite movies...
Robin Hood, Captain Blood and the Son of Captain Blood, were all favorites. Historical movies were particularly fun as they literally transported us to another time and place and showed us pirate ships and a way of life that was very different from own. Living in Germany where there was a castle literally in every town of any significant size, only fed our desire for actors clashing swords in the 17 or 18th century, and firing off pistols and cannon.
There was something about the swashbuckling action with sword play and men bound together by a common enemy, facing not only the perils of the sea, but authorities and those who were determined to stop them, that we were somehow drawn to. Especially when the story line revealed the hero to be wrongly accused of wrong doing, or being pardoned by the King at the end of the movie.
Coming out of the movie theater side doors at the end of the movie, we staggered about like drunken sailors for a few moments, as our eyes adjusted to the blinding, bright light outside.
Immediately, we would begin mock swordplay as we had seen just moments before. Had some ropes or vines been dangling outside the theater, we would have all been swinging wildly around as we acted out the best parts of the movie.
While there was a bit of a letdown as we walked from the movie theater back to the apartment building we lived in, our thoughts returned to the serial and the seemingly horrific demise of Tom Mix. Discussions led to arguments as to the actual plight of the Miracle Rider, which lasted well into the week.
Appreciation for the diversions
While the lure of the Saturday Matinee gradually wore off as I got older, I really appreciated having a movie theatre wherever we stationed. The diversion from what had become our ordinary life on the front lines of the Cold War was a welcome relief.
In an ironic twist of fate, after I graduated from Frankfurt American High School, I worked at a couple of jobs to save some money before I returned to the U.S. to strike out on my own. One of the jobs I had was working for Recreation Services in a central processing facility where all the movies being distributed to bases in Europe were inspected, repaired and sent on.
As a film inspector, part of my job was to make sure films were as free of cracks and tears as the result of going from one movie projector as it traveled throughout theaters on bases throughout Europe. The natural aging of the film, which became increasingly brittle with time, and going through countless theatre projectors left many films damaged and prone to breaking.
Mending the past
Many of the same serials I enjoyed in the early 1960s were now crossing my workspace and while I had a moment of nostalgia, the serials, most of which were about 30 years old at the time, were in really bad shape and required a lot of splicing and repair to get them ready to send out again.
We repaired the films which had broken sprocket holes or cracks in the edges of the film by simply cutting the film, removing the bad frames and splicing or gluing the film back together again. This results in some garbled dialog and jumpy scenes as more and more bad sections of the film are removed.
If only you could do this with real life! Imagine editing out that terrible blind date or first car accident.
Once in a while I will turn to Turner Classic Movies or AMC and have my TIVO record an old Tarzan movie so I can get my Saturday Matinee "fix".
It's not quite the same as going to a Saturday Matinee, but if I pop a bag of popcorn in the microwave, start the movie, then close my eyes, for a few seconds I'm back in Mannheim, Germany, if only for a few brief moments.
