Street Fighting Moves - The 3 Most Qualified Types of Street Fighting Instructors Tuesday, October 5, 2010

Before you can go about searching for the right self defense instructor, it is of utmost importance to understand that if your goal is to learn reality-based street fighting then, you will need to find an teacher with the real-world experience to support any of the black belts or awards he or she may have won.

After having been in the world of martial arts and self protection for several years now, it has become very apparent to me that there are three types of fighting instructors that are most suited for teaching street fighting. The first thing that I want to emphasize is that they may or may not have a black belt in a particular style or fighting system. Having a black belt is admirable, but in and of itself is not an absolute indicator of the best that teacher you will find.

#1 Most Qualified: Personal Body Guards (Especially Those That Are High Level Who Protect Diplomats and Politicians) - If you are lucky enough to find someone who is a black belt AND has had real world experience as a body guard, you can be sure that they know and are capable of using only that which will work 99% of the time. No fancy stances. No exotic postures or loud breathing through their nostrils while they move their hands and arms in slow circles in front of an opponent. Professional body guards are trained to have a high level awareness of danger and the deadly ability to respond. This is what counts in the streets.

#2 Most Qualified: Professional Bouncers - Two of the most trained fighters that I know and are also my teachers, Norm Bettencourt of Vancouver, B.C. Canada and Christopher "Bob" Roberts residing in Frankfurt, Germany, both black belts, have had extensive experience working the doors of night clubs which become a magnet for trouble as people start to drink and become rowdy and belligerent. The fact is that most bouncers see and are involved in more fights and altercations than most policemen in the course of a regular working day or night.

#3 Most Qualified: Military Combatants - The absolute best trainer that you can get is a black belt AND ex-military commando. Now we are talking about all around fighting machines. These are the proud men of our armed forces: Green Berets, Navy SEALS and Special Forces. Many of these type of instructors have had hand-to-hand combat and have stared death in the face many times. Who would be better to teach you how to handle the mugger in the streets than these guys? I guess that again I have been super blessed to also to have been trained by Andy Curtiss, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, black belt and ex-Green Beret. I can speak from personal first-hand experience is that when you are taught martial arts from the combative perspective, you can really learn what you need to know in as little as one weekend or in total of as little as 12 hours.
